If Heaven has a Southern star, it will shine more brightly with the passing on February tenth of Camilla Hudson Martin, a true Southern lady. In 1936, Camilla was born in Bermuda to Nina Bell Hudson, a graduate of Juilliard and Keith Hudson, an Australian born architect and graduate of MIT. Moving to Montrose, Alabama her father worked on a number of commercial and residential projects in Birmingham, and they resided there happily until his death. Camilla and her mother relocated to Columbus, MS where she spent the rest of her formative years, graduating from MSCW with a degree in education. After graduating college she taught abroad in Japan, Germany, and Turkey, returning to Gulfport, MS. In 1968 Camilla married James Lyons Martin (Jim) a successful author and sportscaster on WLOX TV. Camilla taught at Green Acres Elementary School in Long Beach, MS, and later worked at Beauvoir, the Jefferson Davis Memorial, the daughters of the American Revolution and was active member of St. Marks Episcopal Church. Predeceased by her daughter, Camilla Ann and her parents.
Camilla was survived by her husband, Jim, her son Bill, her stepson James Martin (Jimmy) and grandchildren Andrew, JD, and Chad. A devoted daughter, mother, and family member. Love, generosity, kindness, and gentility were innate with Camilla. If you needed an empathetic ear or a favor of any sort, you had only to ask. Her family in LA(Bells) TX(Pawliks) and MS(Ewings) and her many friends will never forget her lovely caring nature and she will be greatly missed by us all until we see her again.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 18, at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home. 8730 Sims Road Eight Mile, AL at 12Noon.
