Mattie Lou Fillingim Hattenstein, 82, was born November 03, 1939, in Chickasaw, Alabama, to the late Otis Fillingim and Mary Mellie Ulmer. She passed at her home in Mobile on July 03, 2022. Although short in stature, Mattie made up for it with her big, loving heart; she was well-known for helping anyone in need from any walk of life. She was also strong woman with a spark. Mattie spent the majority of her life living on her own terms and she didn’t require much to make her happy. Mattie loved computers and the internet; she enjoyed time spent on social media websites like Facebook and Twitter while drinking a warm cup of coffee. Although a homebody, Mattie enjoyed visits from the many friends and family who stepped through her doorway. Mattie was married twice and divorced twice—first to Pat Rice and then to Ronald Hattenstein, Sr.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Timothy Rice; three brothers, Tommy Ray Fillingim, Jack Fillingim, and John Fillingim; and a sister, Jeanette Wilkins.
Left to cherish her memories and honor her legacy are her sons, Neal Hattenstein, Ronald Hattenstein, Jr., and Dale Rice; a daughter, Lorie Walley; a granddaughter, Amelia (Cole) Howard; two great-grandchildren, Caroline Howard and Liam Howard; a sister, Alice Goodman; an adopted sister, Rita (Randy) Smith; nephew Curt Cole; and long-time family friend, John Firouzkouhi, who was like a son to her, as well as many more nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom she adored.
Honoring Mattie as pallbearers will be Jack Cockrell, Sr., Jack Cockrell Jr., Cole Howard, Jordan Wilson, David Rushing, and Curt Cole. Honorary pallbearer is Wayne Cockrell.
